Letter to Beloit students

Dear students,

The COVID-19 virus situation across the globe and in the United States is increasingly volatile. Since President Bierman sent his message to you yesterday, the number of positive cases of the virus has increased across the country and in Wisconsin. We have also received many questions about whether students should stay on campus or return before March 28. As of today, March 12, 2020:

  • We are requiring that every student who is away from campus for spring break remain away.
  • We are requiring that students who are currently on campus return home if at all possible until March 28.
  • Students who are traveling on campus-sponsored trips should return to campus as needed to retrieve necessary academic and personal belongings and then leave campus.

Students who must remain on campus or return to campus will be able to stay in their rooms, but they will need to understand that campus will be different from what they were used to before the break.

  • Instruction will be online the week of March 23-30.
  • Very few students are expected to remain on campus.
  • C-Haus is closed for the remainder of the semester.
  • Campus events, including athletic competitions, are canceled.
  • DKs will not be open; however, food will be served in Commons.
  • The library and the Powerhouse will be open very limited hours.
  • Students, faculty, and staff must practice social distancing and avoid large gatherings.
  • Students should sleep in their own rooms.
  • No visitors are allowed on campus and in the residence halls.
  • There will be no group trips to Walmart or other off-campus locations. Instructions for placing food orders, however, will be shared.
  • Students that must stay on campus should restrict their movements on campus to the extent possible. Students are being allowed to stay here for their personal safety and the safety of others.
  • Students who feel ill should contact the Health & Wellness Center at 608.363.2331, or after hours, Security at 608-363-2355.

We are developing plans to allow student work and compensation to continue whether students are on-campus or off-campus. We are also working with students who are studying abroad about their plans for the rest of the semester.

Please remember that Beloit College is committed to enabling students to complete their courses and stay on track toward graduation. Accordingly:

  • the drop date for current courses has been extended to April 1,
  • advising for the fall 2020 semester will take place April 1-10,
  • registration for fall classes is scheduled for April 14-17,
  • Beloit International Summer Block courses have been canceled, and
  • campus-based Summer Block courses will be offered as planned.

We continue to evaluate this rapidly changing situation and ask you to pay regular attention to the COVID-19 website and to your beloit.edu email for further updates from the college. If you have questions or concerns, please email covid-19@beloit.edu.

Above all, please avoid all non-essential travel, maintain social distance, and continue to follow guidelines for avoiding disease transmission.

Regards,
The COVID-19 Task Force
