Here
is an example of how the cover letter that goes with
your resume in a job application should appear.
Before I start, here's a few comments based on a cover
letter I just reviewed:
1. There is a misspelling in
the first line - pharmaceuticals -
that
would make
him
trash
your
application
right
there.
2. Don't start the letter by stating you are applying
for a job. Make a personal connection first.
3. The greeting should be Dear Dr. Dalton: as first
contact should be formal - title and colon.
1.
Cover letterBE CONFIDENT SELL YOURSELF
a. it should be approximately one page long, typed in
business format.
b. FIRST PARAGRAPH - start out with the job you are
applying for, how you heard about it, why you want it
(For research position internships, people prefer those
who are considering graduate school - most research
scientists will strongly favor a pre-graduate school
applicant over a pre-medical applicant - it is best
to say you are considering graduate school, even better
to be considering it at that particular school, with
particular professors there)
c. SECOND PARAGRAPH - why are you qualified? Include
highlights from resume such a academic ability, lab
competence and skills, previous research type experience
(lab projects),
d. THIRD PARAGRAPH - personal/leadership skills, communication
skills (speaking and writing), especially ability to
get along with others.
e. FOURTH PARAGRAPH - I look forward to hearing from
you. I can be reached at (fax, telephone, email).
f. Be as personal as possible showing your knowledge
of the position, your ability to succeed, etc.
HERE
ARE THE EXAMPLES THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND.
