HOW TO PRINT A POSTER (NOV, 2008) This is for [David Murray Memorial] Science Center Room 450 poster printer design jet 5500. Powerpoint usually interprets IBM- or MAC-type formatted files. It is controlled from either a Mac 10 computer or an IBM type computer. These directions are for using the Mac computer to the left of the door as you enter the room. LEAVE THE DOOR LOCKED WHEN NO ONE IS THERE - COMPUTERS ARE STOLEN!! I. PREPARE YOUR POSTER THOROUGHLY: MUST BE THOROUGHLY REVIEWED AND PROOFREAD BEFORE PRINTING. THE PRINTING PROCESS TAKES ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES AND COSTS SOMEONE ABOUT $25. WE CANNOT AFFORD REPRINTING FOR CARELESS MISTAKES. PLEASE DO NOT TIE UP THE PRINTING COMPUTER FOR AN HOUR WHILE YOU DECIDE WHAT TINGE OF YELLOW TO USE. THE poster printer must be set up and ready to operate before you even start, which can take 30 minutes. Ask Doreen Dalman, the Science Division Secretary in [David Murray Memorial] Science Center Room 114 , who is expert. Generally Matte (non-glossy) paper is used, medium speed and quality works well. Printer has LCD display showing it is ready to operate. Click here if you need to change the paper. II. LOADING YOUR POSTER FILE: Load your file. You can do this by receiving your poster as an attachment to an email at the computer, or with a USB memory stick (Cruzer) you bring, or preferably by emailing it to ordman@beloit.edu the day before so Roc can bring it. Create a temporary student folder on the desktop. Save your poster file into that folder. III. PRINTING -1. Open your file from the TEMORARY STUDENT FILES by double clicking on it. Note your file must have a short name with the suffix .ppt For example, rocsposter.ppt. Examine your poster carefully and edit it to make it appear as you would like. Be sure there is a white margin around the edge of your text on the poster, because the outer two inches of the actual poster do not print, as seen in print preview below. Move text boxes closer to the center of your poster if necessary. Try to avoid dark colored backgrounds - printer ink costs money and dark backgrounds look ominous. Be sure to use watermark for picture backgrounds - see poster background. Below are the proper settings. Often you need to scroll up or down after clicking on an arrow to find the setting you are looking for: 3. Landscape – OK 7. Observe the margins on the poster as it starts printing to see if it’s okay. You can see the printing on the poster through the plastic cover on the printer. If there are any problems when poster is printing out, you can push CANCEL on poster printer to abort printing. You may have to hold the CANCEL button in for 30 seconds to override certain functions. Pushing it briefly, it sometimes responds "UNABLE TO CANCEL" but holding button in longer time may stop it. As poster file has already loaded from the MAC to the printer, cancelling printing on the MAC does not help once actual printing has started.
