Robin's Teaching Abroad

ACM Tanzania Program

Co-Director, Fall 2003
Instructor, Research Methods (University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania)

The ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest) Tanzania Program offers undergraduates the opportunity to study intensive Swahili, Ecology, Human Evolution and Research Methods at the University of Dar er Salaam and a five-week field camp experience in Endulen/Laetoli and the Serengeti, two of the world's greatest paleoanthropological and ecological sites.

Following eight weeks of course work at the University of dar es Salaam, students conduct individual field research in human ecology, biology, paleoanthropology, archaeology, zoology or sociocultural anthropology. Upon their return to Dar es Salaam, students analyze their data, write final reports, give public presentations, and create museum displays or posters for local distribution. I tought the Research Methods

Both of the two field sites of the ACM Tanzania program have been preserved in their natural state for millions of years and continue to be among the world's most fertile sites for archaeological and biological research. The Serengeti boasts the oldest ecosystem on the planet, which contains an enormous variety of terrestrial wildlife, from large mammals to countless birds, reptiles and insects. Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli are home to a 1.75 million-year-old Australopithecus cranium, the first identification of Homo habilis, and a long trail of 3.5 million-year-old hominoid footprints discovered by Mary and Louis Leakey and archaeological teams in the last century.
